Alonso delivers ominous prediction for Verstappen F1 rivals

Two-time F1 World Champion Fernando Alonso has predicted extended success for Max Verstappen as the Dutchman prepares for what will likely be a title-clinching Qatar Grand Prix weekend.

Red Bull driver Verstappen’s dominance over the rest of the field this year means he enters the weekend at the Lusail International Circuit with the chance to wrap up his third title as early as the Sprint race on Saturday.

Alonso was his nearest challenger in the opening half of the season before Aston Martin’s performance levels dropped in relation to rivals and speaking to media including the Spaniard said: “Big congratulations on an incredible season, breaking so many records.

“When you win so many races, and they weren’t easy races, sometimes they were tricky with weather conditions – I think we went through June and July, all the races were hit by rain on Saturdays and Sundays.

“When you make no mistakes and deliver the job every Sunday… big respect.”

Schumacher comparison

Four-time champion Sebastian Vettel drew comparisons between Verstappen and F1 legend Michael Schumacher, who is tied with Lewis Hamilton on seven titles.

Asked if he backed the comparison having raced against all four drivers, Alonso replied: “I’ve only been wheel to wheel with Michael.

“We have to wait and see.

“I think the next few years will be even better for Max, to be honest, he will keep adding championships.

“So we will compare to Michael even closer in the future.”
