Fernando Alonso was the topic of the day as he made a surprise revelation about his departure from Alpine while there was an update on Max Verstappen’s broken trophy.
F1 is a few days away from its final race before the summer break with teams and personnel shortly flying out to Belgium and the Circuit of Spa-Francorchamps.
But in the meantime, instead of looking forward we are looking back at all the F1 news you may have missed today:
Fernando Alonso would have signed a new Alpine deal but nothing was offered
Fernando Alonso’s departure from Alpine was a well publicised moment in both his history and the team’s and while Alpine unwittingly became the subject of a meme tweet from Oscar Piastir, it seems they could have avoided all that had they acted a little quicker.
Speaking to NextGen, Alonso revealed he would have signed a new contract but never actually received an offer.
“Last year was quite a stressful Grand Prix here [Hungary] in terms of emotions, with that offer from Lawrence [Stroll],” he is reported as having told NextGen in an interview. “But yes, it was a good decision, a lucky decision and I’m glad I made it.
“In fact, it wasn’t a choice, because I didn’t receive any concrete offer from Alpine. Just words. If I’d had an offer from Alpine at the start of the year, I would have signed it, that’s for sure. But I only had one offer and I accepted it.
“At Alpine, last year, I would have signed up.”
Red Bull starting to feel effects of cost cap punishment
Another major storyline of the 2022 season was the handing out of a fine plus reduction of wind tunnel time to Red Bull for their overspend but while plenty are now arguing that punishment was not severe enough, it was always going to be likely that it would not be until later when the
Milton Keynes team began to feel the hit.
Christian Horner believes that time is now.
“We have that penalty until October this year,” he said.
“So, particularly in terms of the number of runs that you can do per week, we’re significantly down compared to second and third place and massively down to teams in fourth and fifth.
“If you compare to McLaren and the amount of runs they can do in a wind tunnel versus ourselves, it’s a huge, huge difference.
“So we have to be very, very selective in the running that we’re doing. That’s where the engineering team back in Milton Keynes are doing an incredible job in the way that they’re effectively and efficiently developing the car.”
Stoffel Vandoorne given Spa run-out
As we have seen with Daniel Ricciardo and Mick Schumacher, Pirelli tyre tests are a chance for team’s to give their reserve drivers a run-out and Aston Martin have opted to do that next week.
Following the Belgian Grand Prix, Stoffel Vandoorne will stick around for some laps of his home track in the AMR23 to test out next year’s rubber.
Max Verstappen happy to have kept the receipt for Hungary trophy
Have you ever had a product break only to release you are a few days after the guarantee expires?
Well luckily for Max Verstappen, he has avoided that situation as the maker of his infamous Hungarian Grand Prix victory trophy has promised to make him a new one after Lando Norris smashed the original one.
“It is with great regret that we learned yesterday that the beautiful Herendi trophy, a handmade work of art, was damaged,” CEO Attila Simon told M4 Sport.
“It is the result of nearly six months of work by more than 30 people and we were very sorry to see this happen to our artwork.
“But we believe, and Herendi Porcelain Manufactory is a company that plays a key role in building the country’s image, that we will replace the trophy for the first place winner, and while the teams decide who was at fault and who was not, we will take on the joyful and heavy burden of this.”
