Seven-time F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton has voiced his support for Andretti’s bid to join the grid.
The FIA approved Andretti Cadillac Racing’s application to establish a team in F1 ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix weekend, with the process now switching to a commercial discussion with Formula One Management.
A number of current teams have frequently expressed disapproval over adding a 10th team amid concerns over how it would dilute the end-of-year revenue shares.
F1 has competed with 10 teams since the 2017 campaign, but the sport’s recent boom in popularity has seen more parties interested in setting up their own outfits.
Not enough cars
Asked for his views on the bid, Hamilton told media including RacingNews365.com “I think it’s great.
“I’ve always felt that there weren’t enough cars on the grid. There are definitely people that won’t be happy for me to be supportive of it.
“But I think it’s great. It’s an opportunity for more jobs. There’s an opportunity for another two seats available for a potential female driver to come through.
“It’s opens up more possibilities. And I think it would be more exciting for the race.”
