Nyck de Vries has lost his AlphaTauri Formula 1 seat with immediate effect, according to reports from a close family friend.
Allard Kalff – a respected journalist in Dutch motorsport media – reported on Tuesday morning that the Dutch driver would be leaving the team immediately after a poor first-half of his rookie season alongside Yuki Tsunoda.
Red Bull driver boss Helmut Marko had called for de Vries to improve his performances over recent weeks, but the 2019 F2 champion only has a best finish of 12th to his name – in the Monaco Grand Prix.
Having grown frustrated at de Vries’ inability to turn the performances around, Marko has pulled the plug and decided to relieve the former Mercedes reserve driver of his driving duties.
There is no word yet as to who will replace de Vries alongside Tsunoda – although Daniel Ricciardo has been heavily linked with a return to the grid – and is completing a tyre test for Pirelli at Silverstone at the wheel of the Red Bull RB19 on Tuesday, 11th July.
This story will be updated throughout the afternoon.
